On February 23, 2008, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake (vibration velocity 93.5 mm/sec) caused stones from the facade to fall onto the church square in broad daylight – half an hour earlier, schoolchildren had still been in the church. The Primsmulde, the mining area beneath Saarwellingen, was at the time the most profitable area in German hard coal mining, which was scheduled to cease operations in 2018. The earthquake intensified protests against mining and organized them into the IGAB, the interest group for the prevention of mining damage. The earthquake and the image of the debris lying on the church square marked a turning point, leading to the closure of mining in Saarland. Coal mining finally ended on June 30, 2012. A profound structural change took place in Saarland, as jobs in the mining industry and its supply chain disappeared.
