Castelvecchio Castle in Rocca Barbena dominates the medieval village of the same name, perched on a rocky spur in the Savona hinterland. A former stronghold of the Del Carretto marquises, it was built for military and defensive purposes, and its strategic location made it the fulcrum of feudal power over the valley below. Today, the imposing manor is reduced to a fascinating ruin, its ruins revealing centuries of history. Although no longer intact, the atmosphere surrounding it is highly evocative. Its crumbling walls and towers have become the symbol of the village, a true testament to its glorious past.

It's true, we're talking about cycle tourism here... but it's worth spending some time visiting this beautiful village, or even just stopping to take a look, the view is superb! I rode the road downhill, but even uphill it must be a wonderful experience, given the slopes you encounter, never excessive and regular. The only flaw, the road in the valley, at least up to the detour to Castelvecchio, is always quite busy, even with heavy vehicles, so you need to be careful... even downhill!

The Via Julia Augusta is located between Albenga and Alassio in Liguria and once continued to Provence in France. The Via Julia Augusta was built in 13 BC and was intended to transport trade goods overland. Today the Via Julia Augusta is a wonderful place to hike and at the same time experience a piece of culture in Ligurian history.

S2 challenging for those like me who don't like descents with exposed rocks and roots, perfect for those with good technique.

Fun descent as always in the Finale area...be careful, some points are particularly "acidic"...

In this stretch you tread on a real fragment of history: it is the Via Iulia Augusta. This communication route was built in 13 BC. at the behest of Emperor Augustus. It connected Rome with southern Gaul. It unfolds in a wonderful environment and offers breathtaking views!

Difficulty segment S2, but without objectively difficult passages. Some points are better covered with a little speed. The segment begins by crossing a centenary beech forest crossed by what is an ancient Roman road. Beware of the possible passage of some off-road vehicles.

Definitely more of an S3 trail, very muddy and slippery for us.

Between the towns of Albenga and Alassio lies a very beautiful section of the ancient Via Iulia Augusta. If you start from Alassio there are good parking options at S.Croce 🅿️. From Albenga: if you don't want to park in town, there are options along the river towards the beach. Emperor Augustus opened this path around the year 12/13 BC. Overall, it is a coastal road that connected northern Italy with southern France (Gaul) and Spain, after previously independent Maritime Alpine peoples (such as the Ligurians) were either subjugated or “united” with the Romans through alliances. Wikipedia writes that this enabled an army to reach the Iberian Peninsula in 27 days, and with 4 changes of horses and 70 km per day, they reached Arles within 8 days! Along our route there were essentially buildings of the Albenga necropolis as well as a really well-preserved piece of the via itself!

Super great trail that can be driven with a lot of speed. From time to time there are slightly larger steps, which gives the trail the S3 rating, apart from the steps and some narrow and steep curves, great fun even for less experienced drivers.

2 really great S2 trails. No really difficult passages and everything can be rolled over. So also good for less experienced drivers. Some passages require a bit of speed, but that too is easy to get.

The Italian municipality with (approx.) 150 inhabitants is located at an altitude of 420 meters above sea level in the province of Savona (Liguria) The special charm and characteristics of the brightly painted houses are immediately apparent when cycling 🚴‍♂️ & hiking 🥾 through the city on! I can recommend the view (including from the serpentine road) of the Castello dei Clavesana!

Incredibly fun trail that rolls up and down like a, well: rollercoaster and staples a grin in your face. In my opinion there is nothing S3, key points S2, but long stretches s1 or s2 minus. The trail encourages you to drive quickly, offers beautiful jumps and great views on top of that. Probably one of the most fun trails I've ever ridden! Relatively bombed and dusty in the lowest section.
