St. Margaret's Church, with its striking bell tower, and Kahla's old town are situated on a 700 x 25-meter sandstone plateau where a mighty town castle stood in the Middle Ages. A special feature of the church is its late medieval four-bell chime. All bells, dating from 1415 to 1516, have survived the test of time and are preserved in their original condition. The oldest element in the church is the baptismal font, probably dating from the 12th century. The town church, with its distinctive 66-meter tower, dominates the townscape. The church's namesake is also the town's patron saint. Formerly a castle, the old town and the church now stand on a roughly 700-meter-long sandstone plateau that rises approximately 25 meters above the Saale River.

The Saale Valley Bridge along the A4 motorway near Jena is not only one of the most impressive bridges in Germany, but also a significant monument to the history and progress of bridge construction. It carries the B88, two Deutsche Bahn tracks, the Saale River, and the Saale floodplain. With its 17 main arches, it rises as a striking arched bridge made of limestone masonry. At 794.27 meters long, it was once the longest motorway bridge in the former Reichsautobahn network and remains an indispensable component of one of Thuringia's busiest intersections. It is the only remaining gate of the city fortifications. Its original appearance has been altered by subsequent renovations. It also houses the oldest stone depiction of Kahla's city coat of arms. Kahla is one of the few cities to feature a female dragon slayer in its coat of arms. Margaret, a martyr and Christian saint, is depicted in a victorious battle with the dragon (Satan). The coat of arms can be found in several places throughout the city.

The historically rich small town of Kahla lies in the scenic middle part of the Saale Valley. It is dominated by the Leuchtenburg Castle, the "Queen of the Saale Valley," and the Dohlenstein, a dominant shell limestone slope whose present shape has been shaped by several rockfalls since 1780.
