The monastery was built in 1310-1340 under Robert of Anjou by Gagliardo Primario. The original church, a two-story hall building with a beamed ceiling and numerous side chapels, was built in the Provençal-Gothic style. Giotto and his workshop also worked on some frescoes in the church. After several collapses, the campanile was only completed in 1604.
