Unique place in the world!

Matera is an Italian city in the Basilicata region, the capital of the province of the same name. It lies on the edge of the Murgia plateau. Its surroundings are home to the most important caveman settlements in the Mediterranean region. Since 1993, the "Sassi di Matera" (Stones of Matera), the oldest part of the city, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A World Heritage Site, and rightly so. A dream by day and by night.

Small baroque style church completely immersed in greenery

The church of San Giovanni Battista, in Apulian Romanesque style, is certainly among the most beautiful churches in Matera, as well as being the first built outside the ancient walls of the city and the Sassi. Its construction dates back to the beginning of the 13th century and was built on the remains of a small church, Santa Maria la Nova, from which it initially took its name. At the end of the 17th century Monsignor del Ryos reopened it for worship and dedicated it to San Giovanni Battista but, due to the long period of abandonment, intense restoration work was necessary which profoundly modified its original structure.
