It was built in the historicist style on Piazza Verdi at the former western gate of the old town of Palermo. A church and the monastery of San Giuliano previously stood on the site. Both were demolished to make room for the new building. The architect was Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile, who began construction in 1875. After his death, the building was completed in 1897 by his son Ernesto Basile.

It's a bit hidden from the other buildings but still a fascinating sight. There are a lot of musicians in the corner at the weekend.

As the largest opera house in Italy and third largest in Europe, it offers much more than just spectacular performances. The long construction period from 1864 to 1897 reflects not only the architectural splendor, but also the symbolic spirit of Italian unification. In front of the Teatro Massimo there is a lively square that was once the site of a church and a monastery. Today this space is animated by music, the energy of the people and the vibrant street life of Palermo. The neoclassical facade, crowned by a portico with six Corinthian columns and flanked by two watchful lion sculptures, welcomes visitors with open arms. The opening with Verdi's “Falstaff” in 1897 was a cultural event that underlined the importance of the theater. But the true soul of the Teatro Massimo is revealed in the fabulous acoustics of its interior, where every note resonates with a clarity that captivates visitors. The opportunity to visit the theater independently of performances allows you to admire the splendor of the opera hall and the attention to detail in its furnishings up close. The story of Teatro Massimo is also one of resilience. After a long closure caused by corrupt building policies, it reopened in 1997, just in time for its centenary - a symbol of Palermo's cultural and political rebirth. The Teatro Massimo's fame extends beyond Italy's borders, not least because of its role in the final scenes of “The Godfather III”. But beyond its cinematic fame, it remains a vibrant center of art that connects visitors to the depth and diversity of the opera world.

Built in 1184 in the Norman-Arabian style, it reflects the diverse influences that have affected the island over the centuries. Its architecture is a harmonious mix of Moorish, Norman and later Baroque elements, making it a unique gem. When you enter the huge square in front of the cathedral, you are immediately captivated by its majestic appearance. The imposing bell tower rises proudly into the sky, while the Rosalia monument looks watchfully over the square. The first sight of the cathedral, with its rich history and ornate decorations, makes you stop and time stands still for a moment. Inside there is a labyrinth of ornate chapels, each corner telling its own story. The graves of the Hohenstaufen emperor Henry VI are particularly touching. and Frederick II and Queen Constance of Sicily, who symbolize a deep connection between Germany and Sicily. These monumental tombs, embedded in the quiet splendor of the cathedral, give the place a sublime atmosphere.

The patronage "SANTA MARIA ASSUNTA" (in German: "Mariä Himmelfahrt") of this church refers to one of the many memorial or festival days in honor of the Blessed Mother Mary. It goes back to the festival of her physical assumption into heaven, which is the (Catholic) Church celebrates annually on August 15. In the Orthodox churches the festival is called "Assumption of the Virgin Mary". In many rural areas it is customary for bundles of herbs to be collected by the population on this day and blessed during the festival service.

In the city center (pedestrian zone) you can see many beautiful buildings such as the Quatro crossing. All around there are many very good restaurants where you can let yourself be pampered.
