The heart of the Marais Poitevin and the Green Venice

The Jean Guilloux chain ferry allows you to cross the Sèvre Niortaise River from Saint Jean de Liversay (Charente-Maritime) to Vix (Vendée). It is free to access and is operated manually. The chain ferry can be used independently by pedestrians and cycle tourists, with a maximum of 6 people per crossing. Cyclists' bicycles may be taken on board the ferry. Operating and safety regulations are posted on each bank. This type of boat was once a common means of crossing canals and channels in the Marais Poitevin. Free access is limited to 6 people or a maximum weight of 450 kg. Pets are allowed. Accessibility dates are from April 5 to October 31, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The acquisition of the "Jean Guilloux" chain ferry was made possible thanks in part to the support of the European Union.

On the banks of the Sèvre Niortaise, in the heart of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park, stands a keep with twin towers. Formerly surrounded by an enclosure of approximately 700 square meters, it is today located in the city center of Niort, a stone's throw from the very beautiful Halles, designed by Eiffel. The keep, built between the 12th and 13th century, has had several functions. A military fortress, it was also a prison and finally a museum. In 1840, it became the first building in Niort to be classified as a Historic Monument.

To cross here, take a bike ride or walk. Grab the chain and pull, this way you will be on the opposite bank.

An evening round after the hard work shot 12km in 2h in wonderful weather in short clothes and sandals. The historical buildings, the watercourses and the variety inspired me!

This lighthouse replaces the old one which was destroyed by German soldiers in 1944. Six years later it was rebuilt and here is the result. It has a slightly art deco look and is pleasing to the eye.

Esnandes is a charming seaside village. Here, one does not only find the impressive historic medieval architecture, but also pure nature as the town borders the National Nature Reserve of the Baie de l'Aiguillon and is located in the Regional Natural Park of the Marais poitevin.
