The Convent of Our Lady of the Star is a 15th-century Franciscan monastery. Founded in 1448 by Pope Nicholas V, the monastery was built on the site of a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Estrela. It is located on the periphery of Marvão's city walls. A late 15th-century Manueline cross stands in the churchyard, with a spiral column containing figures of Christ and Nossa Senhora da Piedade. https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convento_de_Nossa_Senhora_da_Estrela The complex now functions as a nursing home, run by Santa Casa da Misericirdia, which provides care for elderly residents of the region.

The Church of Santa María de Almocóvar, located in the Plaza de España in Alcántara (Cáceres), is one of the most emblematic churches in Extremadura and has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest since 1987. Inside, several pieces of interest are preserved: the tomb of Commander Antonio Bravo de Jerez, made by Lucas Mitata; five panels by Luis de Morales; a recumbent Christ, attributed to Martínez Montañés; a sculpture by Sebastián de Paz from 1639; the tomb of Master Yáñez de la Barbuda; and the baptismal font where Saint Peter of Alcántara was baptized.

It's a hard climb up to Marvao and our route took us us v steep cobbles. Fine on mountain bike but hard on fully laden tandem. The main road will also get you there. Either way views from Marvao and the town itself are fabulous!
