The Rainer Forest is a 250-hectare floodplain forest in the Danube Valley between Straubing and Regensburg in the municipality of Rain in the 1,289-hectare FFH area (DE7040302) and the EU bird sanctuary Forests in the Danube Valley.[1] It is one of 23 primeval forest relic species sites in Bavaria and is characterized by very high-quality stands of old oaks and swamp forests in the otherwise forest-poor Dungau region. From 2005 to 2012, the Bavarian Association for the Protection of Birds (LBV) acquired around 240 hectares of forest in order to preserve and improve it. A forest nature trail leads through the western part of the forest and a concept for environmental education is being drawn up.

Cabbage, swamp, blue and coal titmouse, bullfinch, nuthatch, great spotted woodpecker, treecreeper and squirrel can be observed very nicely.

The Rainer forest is great for walking and the paths are in good condition.

Great bird sanctuary

North of the village of Rain in Lower Bavaria lies a unique piece of forest. It is the Rainer Wald, which was successively acquired between 2005 and 2009 with 240 hectares almost completely by the LBV. The land purchases were supported by the European Agricultural Fund, the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Health, the Bavarian Nature Conservation Fund and the Government of Lower Bavaria. With its nature conservation very high quality stocks of Alteichen and swamp forests, it is a valuable forest relic in the otherwise forest poor Dungau.
