The camp site has removed the sign posts.. ignore the one way and go past the underwhelming pods round the gate and your good to go.. please remember to alert the council of the obvious attempt to block the route..

Nice Cafe, also a public loo in the Abbey car park which is in good order and well looked after.

Unfortunately the Abbey is currently closed to public access because of the risk of falling masonry. Let’s hope they get it open again soon.

Great Abbey Ruin to visit. and have a look around, you can't go inside. The café opposite is great, well worth a visit.

Powfoot is a small coastal village on the eastern shore of the Solway Firth, a body of water that separates Scotland from England. The village is known for its picturesque seaside setting and relaxed atmosphere. On a clear day with good visibility, you may be able to catch a glimpse of Skiddaw's distinctive silhouette on the horizon. Skiddaw is one of the highest peaks in the Lake District, standing at 3,054 feet (931 m) tall. It's located near the town of Keswick.

You can follow the River Nith along this smooth traffic-free towpath. It leads to the attractive pedestrian suspension bridge spanning the River Nith in the town of Dumfries. The river is approximately 70 miles (112 km) long, making it one of the major rivers in southern Scotland.

This scenic road runs parallel to the Nith estuary, offering views over the water revealing a mudstone bed with glacial sands. It's where the River Nith meets the Solway Firth, an inlet of the Irish Sea. The estuary provides a crucial habitat for various bird species, including waders, ducks, and geese, particularly during the winter months. The area is recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA) for birds.

The Abbey of Dulce Cor, better known as Sweetheart Abbey, was a Cistercian monastery founded in 1273 in what is now the village of New Abbey, in the historical county of Kirkcudbrightshire in Dumfries and Galloway. Lady Dervorguilla undertook many charitable acts in her late husband’s Lord of Scotland John Balliol's memory. These included founding the Cistercian abbey of Dulce Cor (Latin for ‘Sweet Heart’) in 1273. It was the last Cistercian monastery to be established in Scotland. When she too died in 1289, Dervorguilla was laid to rest in front of the abbey church’s high altar, clutching her husband’s heart to her bosom.

Great coffee stop and bike shop on the river Nith. A must if you're cycling through Dumfries.

The castle is currently closed for restoration work. But that doesn't detract from a visit, as you can see the remains of the old castle and explore the area around it.

Castle ruins on the edge of the Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve. You can easily spend a few hours exploring the ruins and grounds of Castle Wood. There is now a great tea room and visitors centre for refuelling. Don't miss the scones!

Lovely waterside cafe and restaurant with a good view of the Barbara Channel. The food is excellent if you want to stop for a proper lunch, but the coffee/tea is also good if you're just looking for a pit stop. Plenty of outside space for bikes.

Nice to cycle down to and a lovely picnic area next door to stop

This is a really lovely ride. Was looking forward to coffee and cake at The Frothy Bike Co. but please be aware it's closed each Tues, Weds and Thurs. July 2024 update - please note that The Frothy Bike Co. cafe has closed down. :-(
