The Würzburg–Aschaffenburg railway, also known as the Main-Spessart Railway, is a double-track, electrified main line in Bavaria. It runs from Würzburg Central Station via Gemünden (Main) to Aschaffenburg Central Station. Its importance lies primarily in long-distance and freight traffic, as it connects the Rhine-Main metropolitan area with the Lower Franconian regional center of Würzburg, and beyond with Nuremberg and Munich, as well as towards Austria and Italy. The name derives from the line's route parallel to the Main River and through the Spessart Mountains. Line Construction: The line was licensed by law on May 23, 1846. When the line was opened by the Royal Bavarian State Railways on October 1, 1854, the Main-Spessart Railway was part of the Bavarian Ludwig West Railway from Bamberg via Schweinfurt and Würzburg to Aschaffenburg, up to the then state border with the Electorate of Hesse between Kahl am Main and Großkrotzenburg.
