The Stadtilm market square is considered the largest market in Thuringia with an area of around 10,170 m². Before it was paved in 1834, the market square consisted of a single swamp area. Since its inception, numerous events such as wool markets, demonstrations and various festivals such as the Stadtilm market festival have taken place here. Even today, you can admire the Methfessel monument, which was inaugurated in 1885 and in the center of which an obelisk is dedicated to the composer Albert Methfessel, who was born in Stadtilm. On the site of the building, which now houses the branch of the Arnstadt-Ilmenau savings bank, the Hotel zum Hirsch stood until 1966, where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe often stayed on his trips to Ilmenau.
