In "A Poet's Bazaar," Andersen's inspiration is clearly evident in the view of the extensive forest surrounding Itzehoe: "It wasn't until the afternoon that a lush landscape opened up; we saw a large grove, whose brown foliage in the sunshine gave the appearance of a copper forest; it had something so entirely fairy-like about it that, just as a large herd of cattle emerged from the thicket and stared at us with wide eyes, a whole fairy tale unfolded before me of the enchanted city in the copper wood." Based on the actual route of his first visit to Breitenburg, Andersen could only have crossed the Breitenburg Forest. The extensive forest was a true rarity within Schleswig-Holstein in the 1840s—indeed, for large parts of northern Germany and Denmark.

In his diary entries, Andersen mentions four visits to the Amönenhöhe. The wonderful view over the Stör lowlands was already a popular excursion spot for the Itzehoe bourgeoisie around 1800, and the view remains enchanting even today. The grounds belong to an event venue and can only be visited during public events.

A lake in the forest – secluded and a great place to stop during a hike. Unfortunately, we often hear of people leaving their trash lying around. So, PLEASE, DEAR PEOPLE: take your trash with you. And if that's not possible, stay where the trash can is right next door.

The sand dunes and the small lake are located in the Breitenburger Forest. They can only be reached by hiking. Unfortunately, we often hear of people leaving their trash lying around. So, PLEASE, DEAR PEOPLE: take your trash with you. And if that's not possible, stay where the trash can is right next door.

H.C. Andersen was quite impressed by the beauty of the surroundings of Breitenburg and the Stör valley. In the chapter "Breitenburg" of his work "A Poet's Bazaar," we find this rapturous description: "In the eternally young nature all around, I reveled in old memories. From the high tower of the castle, I gazed far out over the lush marshland, where in summer the fat cattle graze in the grass up to their bellies; I looked at the many forests where Ansgarius wandered and preached Christ's teachings to the Danish heathens; a small village still commemorates this by its name. There stood his house, here he lived. The church beyond, near Heiligenstädten, where the earth is heaped high around the wall, still stands from his time; just as then, it is reflected in the Stör, where he rowed across in his humble fishing boat to the small footpath between the reeds."
