They are red, white, yellow, pink, orange or colorful, anemone-flowered, collared, ball-shaped, cactus-shaped or pompom-shaped - hardly any flower is as diverse as the dahlia. This exotic plant from Central America has long been native to Altona soil and inspires more than 200,000 flower lovers every year in the oldest existing dahlia garden in Europe.

They bloom bright orange, pale pink or bright purple, some have long, pointed petals, others have compact spherical heads: Hardly any other type of flower delights with a comparable variety of shapes and colors as the dahlia. Visitors can get an impression of this diversity in the dahlia garden in Altonaer Volkspark. The magnificent flowers can be seen there from late summer to late autumn. Admission is free. The dahlia garden consists of many beds, each of which grows specific varieties. The individual dahlia varieties each have their own beds, for example there is a pompom bed, a cactus bed and a ball bed. A museum bed also presents old dahlia varieties. The celebrity bed contains dahlias named after well-known personalities, including a Uwe Seeler, a Heidi Kabel, a Loki Schmidt and a Bettina Tietjen dahlia. All dahlia varieties are marked with signs so that amateur gardeners can write down the names of the varieties they particularly like and get ideas for their own garden. Up to 300,000 visitors come to the dahlia garden every year. The first dahlias were planted in the school garden of the Altonaer Volkspark as early as 1920, and in 1932 the dahlia garden moved to its current location on Stadionstrasse. It is Europe's oldest dahlia garden still in existence and has been a listed building since 2002. The 15,000 square meter facility has its own 32 meter deep groundwater well to water the flowers. All dahlias are taken out in winter and stored in the dark at a room temperature of five to seven degrees. Permanent gardeners look after the facility, but guided tours are not possible - the garden team is fully occupied with caring for the plants. Open from mid-July to the end of October The garden is open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk from mid-July until the first night frost at the end of October. A kiosk with a sheltered terrace offers lunch, coffee and cake as well as other snacks. The dahlia garden can be reached by bus number 2, stop Stadionstrasse - from there it is about 400 meters on foot - or by car via Luruper Chaussee. A limited number of parking spaces are available on Stadionstrasse.

The Dahlia Garden in Altona is a particularly beautiful destination for flower and dahlia lovers. Visitors will find over 600 different types of dahlias with a total of more than 11,000 individual plants in the 15,000 square meter garden.

In addition to Hamburg's Stadtpark, Volkspark Altona is the second large green space in the city. There is always something going on here, families play on the large lawn, the smell of barbecues is in the air. The park and the forest are larger, the infrastructure is a little smaller. A relaxed place - unless there is a football game going on next door.
