At the beginning of the 20th century, only a roughly ten-meter-high stump remained of the mighty, 30-meter-high keep, the "Thick Tower" (George's Tower). Rebuilt, it survived several artillery hits on its east side in 1945, the marks of which are still clearly visible today. Climbing the tower is highly recommended. From the spacious viewing platform, visitors enjoy a unique view to the east and west of the Weser Hills' undulating ridge. Until the 19th century, a round tower, the "Wittschieber," stood to the west, below the "Thick Tower." Today, a wide gap yawns in the wall at this location.

Bell Tower "Kühner Henke": The bell tower, known as "Kühner Henke," once served as an official prison before the modern extension to the gate tower was built around 1800. The top of the tower, crowned by a small lantern, still retains its 17th-century appearance. A striking bell was reinstalled in 2012 by the Heimatbund der Grafschaft Schaumburg.

The Osterburg consisted of two neighbouring, independent castles on two hills, which were separated by a moat. They were protected from the outside by earthen ramparts and a deep moat. The remains of a ring wall are believed to be in the ramparts, but archaeological investigations can only provide information about this. The northern and smaller castle hill appears to be of more recent date. The oval structure has a diameter of around 40 × 50 m and a height of around 3 m. In the direction of the larger castle hill to the south there was an area of a small outer bailey. The main castle has an area of around 50 × 70 m and a height of up to 7 m. On it, a round rubble mound with stone remains indicates the former presence of a round tower made of rubble stone. Soil anomalies and depressions on the castle hills indicate collapsed cellars of earlier buildings, which are to be expected here as commercial and residential buildings. The holes may also have been caused in part by illegal excavations, which have already caused major damage to the remains of the castle complex. The distinctive soil shapes of the complex are still clearly visible in the area today, especially due to the surrounding ring moat in the shape of a figure of eight. At the castle site there is now an information board with an explanatory text that shows the complex in plan and as an attempt at reconstruction. The history of Osterburg is largely unknown. It was first mentioned in documents in 1121. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osterburg_(Deckbergen)

The keep of the Schaumburg castle complex, which was essentially built in the 14th century and renovated in 1908, was given its common name "Georgsturm" by Prince Georg zu Schaumburg-Lippe (1846-1911), who ordered its reconstruction. As a reconstruction in 1908 led by the architect Albrecht Haupt on the foundations of the keep, which had been in disrepair since 1640, when the line of the Counts of Schaumburg died out, it is of architectural and art historical value.

The remains of the Osterburg are rather inconspicuous today and without the information board they would probably be easily overlooked. However, the drawing on the board shows that it was actually a double castle on two castle hills.

The bell tower served as an official prison before the "modern" extension to the gate tower was built around 1800. In 1652, among other things, several insubordinate students from Rinteln were imprisoned here. The top of the tower, crowned by a small lantern, still has the appearance of the 17th century. Entry was free when I visited. It takes some effort to climb the top platform of the Georgsturm, but the fantastic view fully compensates for the effort.

The Osterburg consisted of two neighboring, independent castles on two hills, which were separated by a sectional moat. On the outside they were secured by earthworks and a deep moat. In the ramparts, the remains of a ring wall are suspected, about which archaeological investigations can only provide information. The northern and smaller castle mound appears to be more recent. The oval complex has a diameter of about 40 × 50 m and a height of about 3 m. In the direction of the larger castle hill to the south, there was an area of a small outer bailey. The main castle has an area of about 50 × 70 m and is up to 7 m high. Soil anomalies and depressions on the castle mounds indicate collapsed basements of earlier buildings, which are to be expected here as farm and residential buildings. Some of the holes may also have been caused by illegal excavations, which have already caused major damage to the remains of the castle complex. The distinctive ground shapes of the complex are still clearly recognizable in the terrain today, especially due to the surrounding ring ditch in the shape of an eight. At the castle site there is now an information board with an explanatory text that shows the layout of the system and an attempt at reconstruction. The history of the Osterburg is largely unknown.
