The Mastbruch-Rahmer Wald nature reserve in Dortmund is a relatively new protected area that owes its current form and significance primarily to the subsidence caused by coal mining. Nature conservation for the area was first legally enshrined in a landscape plan in 1986 and further consolidated in 1990. This landscape plan was updated in 2020. The municipality has equipped this nature reserve with easy-to-walk tarmac paths, making it possible to use it with strollers or for walks in the rain without getting into a lot of mud.

In the east it is bordered by the Welver-Sterkrade railway line, behind which lies Westhusen Castle. In the west the area extends almost to the A45 federal motorway. In the north it is bordered by the Westerfilde settlement, in the south by the Jungferntal settlement. The nature reserve is characterized as a water bird habitat. Little grebes, mute swans, teals, mallards, moorhens, coots, marsh warblers, reed buntings, nightingales and grasshopper warblers live here. Also amphibians such as great crested newts, smooth newts and the rare grass frog. Around the water there are large populations of cattails and Marsh irises."
