The 21.66-hectare nature reserve was declared a protected area in 1986. The reserve consists of two sub-areas, encompassing the districts "In der unteren Hühnerburg," "In der Mittlere Hühnerburg," and "In der obere Hühnerburg." The area encompasses extensively used meadows with spring-fed marshes. It is home to several endangered plant species and communities and is a habitat for rare insect, bird, and mammal species.

The summit offers a great panoramic view all the way to Frankfurt. Take your time to explore the remains of the Celtic ramparts. The climb is worth it in good weather for a break with a great view.
