Located directly on the main road and impossible to miss. A small cycle/footpath runs behind the tower.

Never completed water tower in Cologne-Worringen; now a private house

Just a few meters from the Cologne Worringen S-Bahn station stands the first photo opportunity: The Cologne Trail guidebook provides the explanation for this unusual brick building: the "Intze Tower" was planned at the beginning of the last century as the base for a water tower for a waterworks, which was never completed. Today it is a listed residential building. From here it's not far to what is perhaps the most beautiful nature reserve within Cologne's city limits, the Worringer Bruch. 👍

The path itself is dead straight and too tidy for me. But what you see to the right and left is a wonderfully overgrown landscape. Until a few years ago you could still get across on old dams. Today they are completely overgrown. The former entrances can only be recognized by the prohibition signs.

The area was placed under “nature protection” and closed. You can now only recognize a number of dams where anglers, basket makers and wood collectors once came and went, only on ground maps https://t1p.de/a9ej3 and on rusty prohibition signs. Without people, blackberries, nettles and ground-nesting birds spread there. Beautiful artificial natural paradise.

The "Battle of Worringen" didn't take place in Worringen, but here on the southern edge of the dead arm of the Rhine. One path is still called Am Blutberg, the district of Blutberg was only renamed Blumenberg when it was built. Here the citizens of Cologne, together with farmers from Bergisch and people from Düsseldorf, triumphed over the archbishop. After that he was only allowed to reside in Bonn and Brühl with mistresses and hunting falcons. From then on, Cologne was able to earn money undisturbed from printing banned books. Thank you, Düsseldorf!
