Ludwigstraße is one of the four urban axes of significant importance from the 19th century. It connects Odeonsplatz in the south with the Siegestor in the north. With its magnificent buildings in the Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Romantic styles, Ludwig I created his "Florence on the Isar" with the architects Leo von Klenze and Friedrich von Gärtner. Shortly before the Siegestor, Ludwigstraße widens into a rectangular square, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz and Professor-Huber-Platz. This is where the main buildings of the Ludwig Maximilian University are located. It was founded in 1472 by Duke Ludwig IX and named after him and the Bavarian King Maximilian I Joseph. The Siegestor marks the border between Ludwigstrasse in Maxvorstadt and Leopoldstrasse in Schwabing. The neoclassical triumphal arch is a monument to victory and a memorial to peace. Cycling tip: Pilot cycle path at the Siegestor The first section of the "Munich North Cycle Path" is being created from the reconstruction of Ludwigstrasse and Leopoldstrasse around the Siegestor. Wide sidewalks and safe cycle paths provide a fast connection between Odeonsplatz and Münchner Freiheit.
