The Paulushof Dam separates the Obersee from the Rurtalsperre Schwammenauel.

The RURSEE was created at the end of the 1930s with the construction of the Schwammenauel dam. Since it can also be used for water sports - unlike the Obersee, which flows into this one near Rurberg and is a drinking water protection area - there are also a wide range of activities on the water. The most comfortable option is undoubtedly a round trip from Schwammenauel to Rurberg and back, although you can extend this and change to a second boat in Rurberg that sails the Obersee to Einruhr. A very nice alternative, however, is to only do one section by boat and combine it with a hike.

The ideal starting point for a walk around the Rursee (approx. 27km). It is also not far to the Urft Dam (approx. 4km) and the former Nazi Ordensburg Vogelsang (approx. 10km).

From the Paulusdamm you have a beautiful view over the Upper and Lower Lake.

The dam separates the Obersee from the Rursee. From there you have a very nice view of Rurberg and the Rursee. On the other side is the Obersee, which stretches to Einruhr and ends with the Urft dam.

The Paulusdamm near the town of Rurberg separates the (actual) Rursee from the Obersee. The latter begins at Einruhr, where the Rur - coming from Monschau or further up the Belgian Fens - flows into the Obersee. This is a valuable water protection area and supplies many people in the greater Aachen area with drinking water. The Rursee below is also used by many water sports enthusiasts. The banks of the Obersee and Rursee are partly part of the Eifel National Park.
