After the peat bog was extracted in the 1960s, the Dutch Forestry Commission began the renaturation of what is now the Bargerveen nature reserve. Today, due to its exceptional diversity of flora and fauna, it enjoys special protection as a European bird sanctuary and an important wetland. You can explore the area on approximately 30 kilometers of hiking trails, enjoy panoramic views of the bog from the observation hill and tower, or experience the unique landscape on guided tours and accessible rides on the Veenland Express train.

For around 500 years, this watermill has been a prominent feature of the landscape along the rushing Nordradde river in Meppen. The current structure was built in 1732 at the behest of Prince-Bishop Clemens August and once served as a grain mill. After extensive restoration, the mill now presents itself as a picturesque stop on a cycling tour – a perfect spot for a picnic.

Unfortunately, the harbor was closed and we had to take a detour.

At the time we were there was a dragon boat race and the harbor was largely closed

The church, situated on a hill, has changed its appearance repeatedly over the centuries. However, parts of the church are still said to be over 1000 years old. The tower was rebuilt after it collapsed during a storm in 1811, destroying large sections of the vault.

A great tour and not strenuous at all.
