The St. Katharina colliery near Stockheim was the most important and last coal mine in Bavaria. Coal was mined here from 1582 to 1968. Today, a geotope with a reconstructed winding tower and a cut coal seam commemorates the town's long mining history. Mining shaped Stockheim for centuries and was the most important economic sector until its closure.

As the name suggests, it's only open on weekends, and even then only on Sundays. However, if you happen to be here on a Sunday, you should definitely try the fantastic cakes. Not buttercream, but the finest whipped cream, because the owner is a cream sommelier.
