Since the municipal reform of 1972, the town of Hitzacker has consisted of the twelve districts listed below. Additional residential areas also exist.

Hitzacker lies at the confluence of the Jeetzel and Elbe rivers. While the Elbe Heights (also known as Klötzie), at whose southeastern foothills Hitzacker is located, are already part of the Lüneburg Heath (compare Drawehn), the lowlands of the old town belong to the Elbe valley. The elevation ranges from 11 m above sea level at the mouth of the Jeetzel to 83 m above sea level in the Klötzie, northwest of the city center. Further downstream, the Kniepenberg near Drethem measures 86 m above sea level and offers a panoramic view of the Elbe valley lowlands.

Hitzacker (Elbe) is a town in the northern part of the Lüchow-Dannenberg district in Lower Saxony. It is part of the Elbtalaue municipality and is located in the Wendland region.
