Laufenburg was first documented in 1173, when the monastery in Säckingen granted the town as a fief to the Habsburgs. The first documented mention of Loufenberc dates back to 1207; the place name means "mountain near the waterfall, near the whirlpool, near the rapids" (Wikipedia).

The shore, and the great photos featured here in the highlight, can only be reached by gravel bike or on foot. In Aha, you can also ride the few meters to the lake on a road bike.

The road will be closed for eight months starting August 11, 2025. From Göschweiler, you can still reach Wutachmühle, but the southern approach is closed.

Laufenburg is a small but beautifully preserved town right on the Rhine. There isn't a huge amount to see, but what there is is lovely.

Beautiful, hilly landscape, like a camel's back. The only thing that's not so pretty are the ugly buildings on top. Be careful, it can be very cold and windy.
