Located on the road linking Lausanne to Pontarlier (Franche-Comté) via the Jougne pass, Lignerolle occupies a privileged position; mentioned only from 1165, the village must in fact have existed for a long time already.

The old church of Saint-Vit, probably built in the 9th century, is attested by documents from 1228. The choir was covered with a ribbed vault around 1400. The western portal and the ribbed vaults of the nave were built in the third quarter of the 15th century. Addition of the south chapel of the choir in the first third of the 16th century. On the fourth bay of the nave, the bell tower was built around the middle of the 16th century, it was raised in 1696 by Daniel Thiébaud, then again in 1741.
