Alpine World Ski Championships The 44th Alpine World Ski Championships took place from February 6 to 19, 2017, in St. Moritz. The resort town in the Swiss Upper Engadine had previously hosted the World Championships in 1934, 1974, and 2003. The alpine skiing events of the 1948 Winter Olympics are also recognized by the FIS as World Championships, meaning that St. Moritz hosted the championships for the fifth time overall in 2017. Austria was the most successful nation with nine medals. Marcel Hirscher was the athlete with the most medals. Built in 1927/28 by architect Valentin Koch, it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the ice hockey, speed skating, and figure skating competitions at the 1928 and 1948 Winter Olympic Games. Today, the stadium is part of the Kulm Hotel's golf course and can only be viewed from the outside, but it remains a historically significant site for sports and Olympic enthusiasts. The story of St. Moritz begins in 1864 The story of St. Moritz, as we know it today, begins in 1864, when hotelier Johannes Badrutt made a bet with his guests from Great Britain. He promised that not only the summer, but also the St. Moritz winter would be so pleasant that on sunny days one could enjoy the sun on the terrace without a jacket. Should his promise prove false, the hotelier would pay for their travel and winter stay. Wrapped head to toe in furs, the group of men crossed the Julier Pass the following December. Upon arriving in St. Moritz, the sky was clear, the sun warm, and Badrutt stood before them to greet them without a jacket and with his shirtsleeves rolled up. Winter tourism was born. The longest escalator in Switzerland, 150 meters long, bridges a height difference of 70 meters. Located near the train station, it leads from Lake St. Moritz through the Serletta parking garage up to the village and the Badrutt's Palace Hotel. It transports around one million people per year and also operates at night. Works by renowned poster artists are displayed in the escalator channel; this escalator also functions as an art gallery.

From the Serletta parking garage on the lake, Switzerland's longest escalator, at 150 meters, rolls up to the main shopping street – transporting its passengers past the Design Gallery.
