The history of the Catholic parish church "Assumption of Mary" is closely linked to the history of the town of Freyung. History: 1872: On June 27, the entire market area, along with the former church, was destroyed by fire. 1877: The current neo-Gothic church was built from rubble and ashes and consecrated on October 24 by the Bishop of Passau, Josef Franz Weckert, as the Church of the Assumption of Mary (patronage day on August 15). The plans were provided by the architect Tanera from Landshut. Furnishings: Altars: The high altar and the two side altars were carved from oak in 1876/77 by the Michael Mayer workshop in Landshut. The statues: were created by the sculptor and church painter Martin Ziegler in his studio in Landshut. Church windows: They were made by the Schneider company in Regensburg and were also made in 1877. The Stations of the Cross are depicted in the nave windows. Renovations: 1971: The two side altars were dismantled and moved to other churches in the diocese. 1974: During the interior renovation of the parish church, the neo-Gothic pulpit was also removed, which unfortunately no longer exists today. A wheelchair access ramp was built in the south of the church. The color scheme of the exterior façade was determined from the original 1877 state after investigations by the State Office for Monument Preservation and the Diocesan Building Office of Passau. Today: The parish church shines in new splendor in the center of Freyung. The church square, extensively renovated in 2011, with its adjacent revitalized Gasthaus Veicht, a well-known traditional inn, is the town's calling card and invites you to linger.
