Maentwrog Dam was built in the 1920s to provide a source of hydroelectric power for the Maentwrog power station. Later in 1965 the lake also became a source of cooling water for the Trawsyfynydd nuclear power station.

Trawsfynydd nuclear power station was the only inland nuclear power plant in the UK. It was able to be situated here because of the large lake that provided sufficient cooling water to the reactors. The power station switched on in 1965 and closed at the end of its safe life in 1991. The planned decommissioning was expected to take about 100 years but in 2021 the Welsh government started to explore plans to install a smaller reactor and reinstate the power station to help Wales reach zero carbon electricity production.

Lake with stunning views

An enormous man-made reservoir, Llyn Trawsfynydd originally provided cooling water for the local nuclear power station (now undergoing decommissioning). The lake lies in the west of Snowdonia National Park and is overlooked by several mountains. While a lake with a nuclear power station on its banks might not sound like a wondrous place, Llyn Trawsfynydd is actually exceptionally beautiful. Cycleways and footpaths have been created around the lakeshore and are well-maintained. With woodlands, nature reserves and wetlands, there’s a lot of animal and birdlife here, as well as Atlantic oakwoods. You can cycle the entire way around the lake thanks to a new trail and National Cycle Route 82 leads you from the north around the eastern side.
