The Merseburg-Meuschau lock, also known as the Meuschau lock, is a lock on the Saale federal waterway. It is located at Saale km 113.50 in Merseburg. The lock was built in 1820. The use of the Saale for transporting goods or people has been documented since 981. Chronicles of shipping on the Saale report that the water of the Saale river was dammed as early as the second half of the 14th century. The dammed water was used to operate mills or for rafting. The first craft in Bernburg that was reported was a mill on the Saale. Past the Neumarktkirche, which is already closed, we walk across the Saale and look at the top of the Merseburg Cathedral, which we reach shortly afterwards.

The Church of St. Thomae is the place of worship in the Neumarkt area. Located directly on the Neumarkt Bridge, it was first mentioned in 1188 in the document of Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa. The Romanesque sacred building was completed around 1210, and various restorations took place over the course of its history, such as the tower in 1565. The church suffered severe damage during the Second World War and was finally abandoned in 1973. Extensive renovation work took place in the 1990s, during which, among other things, the floor, which had been raised by over two meters in the past, was dismantled. After the church as such was abandoned, the altar and baptismal font were moved to the town church of St. Maximi. Nowadays the church is heavily used, especially by pilgrims. The church's patron is Thomas Becket, former Archbishop of Canterbury. The church was designed as a three-aisled, cross-shaped basilica with a two-tower front to the west. The south tower, the north aisle and the apse were demolished in the late Middle Ages. Today St. Thomae Station is on the Romanesque Road.
