🤰 The Pregnant House is one of the most curious and photographed sights in Lüneburg's old town. It owes its name to a striking bulge in its outer wall. It's a beautiful example of how a structural flaw can become a charming piece of local history.

Right next to the Pregnant House is the birthplace of the renowned composer Johann Abraham Peter Schulz. He is the author of well-known melodies such as "Der Mond ist aufgegangen" (The Moon Has Risen) and the Christmas classic "Ihr Kinderlein kommet" (O Come, Little Children). A commemorative plaque on the house still honors the Lüneburg composer. Opposite the Pregnant House is a bronze model of Lüneburg, rendered in Braille. It's also very beautiful to see and highly recommended 👍🏼.

Oh dear, what's that? A house with a bulge? Pregnant? If you stroll leisurely along Waagestraße in Lüneburg today, you'll notice something's not quite right. There's a rather unusual sight here: Lüneburg's Pregnant House. The house owes its prominent bulge to gypsum mortar from the Lüneburg Kalkberg (limestone hill). Back in the 12th century, when houses were built of brick, the people of Lüneburg used this as a substitute for lime mortar. This highly fired gypsum has the property of absorbing a considerable amount of moisture over time and therefore expands. Today, we owe this chemical reaction in the brickwork to a real eye-catcher: Lüneburg's Pregnant House. Highly interesting and definitely worth a visit.

The pregnant house is located directly opposite the town hall on the left. It looks very quaint and is highly recommended for a visit 👍🏼.
