The current main building of the castle dates back to the early 19th century after renovations. The magnificent castle stood empty for 150 years before Jan and Manuela Kube acquired it and carefully renovated it in accordance with historical preservation standards before opening the extensive and impressive Toy Museum in 1988. It is well worth a visit, as dolls, dollhouses and kitchens, rocking horses, tin toys, games, children's books, and tin figures from children's rooms of bygone eras evoke nostalgic memories. During the redesign of the market square, archaeological excavations uncovered a burial ground from the 8th to 10th centuries and the cellar remains of high-ranking buildings from the 12th to 15th centuries. The site can be viewed from above through four "archaeological windows." The covered cellar area houses a permanent exhibition on the excavation findings and can be visited as part of a city tour. Windsheim craftsmen built the town hall between 1713 and 1717 under the Ansbach master mason Johann Michael Aspacher and his foreman Giovanni Rigaglia.
