5월 14, 2025, View of Colmberg Castle
Colmberg Castle sits enthroned on a 511-meter-high mountain spur above the Franconian town of Colmberg in Bavaria. Its history dates back to the 13th century, and it was long owned by the Hohenzollern family. Today, the well-preserved medieval complex houses a castle hotel with a restaurant known for its regional cuisine. The castle offers picturesque views of the surrounding countryside and is a popular starting point for hikes. The 15th-century castle chapel is also a popular venue for weddings.

The choir tower church was built from quarry stone and ashlar masonry and is plastered. The Gothic choir tower in the east and the sacristy on the north side are original. The nave was renovated in 1713. The choir tower has a square floor plan and a rectangular window on the south side. In the bell storey it has arched sound openings of different sizes on the south, east and north sides and a clock face on the north and south sides. It tops off with a pyramid roof. The nave has a gable roof, the ridge of which is at the height of the bell storey, and a bat dormer on the north side. It has an axis of rectangular windows on the north and south sides towards the choir tower, another small rectangular window on the south side, a pointed arch window above it, and on the north side there is a bull's eye and a rectangular portal. The cemetery with walls is located around the church. The hall has a single nave and a wooden gallery on the west and north sides. The gallery parapet features paintings of the Twelve Apostles with their identifying features. In the southeast corner of the hall there is a wooden pulpit, probably from the beginning of the 18th century, with a marbled polygonal basket. On the east side, the hall is connected to the choir by a round-arch arcade. In the groin-vaulted choir there is the altar with a crucifix as a top. Source: Wikipedia

The nave of the hall church was redesigned in the Baroque style in 1728. The recessed choir with a 5/8 end in the east and the lower floor of the three-story choir flank tower on its north wall date from the 14th/15th century and belonged to a fortified church. The top floor of the choir flank tower, which is covered with an eight-sided bent roof, houses the tower clock and the bell cage. The ground floor of the choir flank tower, which is covered with a groined vault, was the original chapel of the place. The interior of the choir with choir stalls from the 15th century is covered with a net vault. In it stands a sacrament house, which is crowned with wooden tracery. The church furnishings include an altar from the first half of the 18th century. The organ with 11 registers, a manual and a pedal was built by Johannes Strebel Source: Wikipedia

The history of the castle can only be deduced from the documents from the 13th century onwards; all claims about the period before that are purely speculative. The castle first appears explicitly in 1269 as being owned by the Counts of Truhendingen, who had the castle administered by bailiffs who exploited the lawless situation at the time by carrying out high-handed attacks. The oldest court records of the imperial city of Rothenburg attest to an almost endless chain of complaints about criminal offences committed by Colmberg officials before the local court after 1274, for example about unpaid debts, breached guarantees, trespassing, robbery, deprivation of liberty, theft and arson. Finally, in 1293, it was not the Truhendingen bailiff at the time who was outlawed, but the entire Colmberg castle. Because the Counts of Truhendingen were getting into increasing financial difficulties, they separated from this fortress with such a bad reputation, a documented robber baron castle. Colmberg was finally sold on July 13, 1318, together with the town of Leutershausen and the surrounding area, to the Burgrave Friedrich IV of Nuremberg for 6,200 pounds (Swabian) Haller Pfennig. The place was first mentioned in documents in 1269 as "Cholbenberc". The castle of the same name is much older, and its name derives from a field name that referred to a mountain that was covered with cattails at its foot. Around 770, a wooden fortification was built on the Kolbenberg. The fortification became an imperial fief with the Duchy of Franconia in 939. In 1000, Emperor Otto III donated the game reserve around Colmberg to the Bishopric of Würzburg. In 1128, Colmberg became a fief of the Counts of Hohenlohe. In the period from 1150 to 1240, the old fortification was expanded into the Imperial Castle of Colmberg under the German emperors and their governors. In 1254, Count Friedrich von Truhendingen seized the imperial fief of Colmberg after the Staufen emperors died out. Counts Friedrich VIII and Konrad von Truhendingen sold Colmberg to Burgrave Friedrich IV of Nuremberg for 6,200 pounds of Haller Pfennig. Around 1320, Colmberg was the seat of a burgrave (later margrave) upper office with a bailiff and treasurer. The settlement of "Altenstatt" near Colmberg was first mentioned in 1361. The parish church of St. Ursula was first mentioned in 1375. In addition to the parish church, there was the chapel of Colmberg Castle, as a baptismal font from the late 13th century shows; in 1451, Margrave Albrecht Achilles had the castle chapel rebuilt on the first floor of the bower building and appointed a chaplain who was entitled to two thirds of the Colmberg tithe.
