Roman Vicus Kempraten, Rapperswil-Jona The Roman vicus of Kempraten Archaeological finds from the Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron Ages prove that the Rapperswil-Jona area was a favored settlement landscape in all eras. Around 40 AD, a small Roman town, a vicus, developed in the bay of Kempraten. For the surrounding region, such vici were important centers of trade, crafts, and administration. The vicus of Kempraten, whose Roman name was probably Lindomagus, was situated on an important transport route between the Alpine Rhine Valley and the Swiss Plateau. This route led from Curia (Chur GR) via Lake Walen, Lake Zurich, and the Limmat Valley to the military camp of Vindonissa (Windisch AG). In Kempraten, a road branched off to the vicus Vitudurum (Oberwinterthur ZH) and further to the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes. A bridge spanned the narrows of Lake Rapperswil, connecting to the southern shore of Lake Zurich and from there to Central Switzerland, at least for a time. Long-distance trade was conducted by ship via lakes and rivers. Lake Zurich, the then larger Upper Lake (Obersee), and Lake Walen offered ideal opportunities in this regard. The settlement was certainly inhabited until the 5th century. Little is known about the early medieval period. Some grave and settlement remains from the 7th century, the mention of the settlement name Centoprata in a document from 741 AD, and the first mention of the church in Kempraten around 835 AD indicate continuous settlement of the area from Roman times to the Middle Ages.
