ANAGNI IS BEAUTIFUL

Nice climb. Asphalt a bit ruined, a pain in the ascent especially on the hairpin bends.

It rises on the Ernici Mountains, at the top of the Sacco Valley, at an altitude of 724m. It was founded in the 5th century by inhabitants of Anagni who fled an invasion

After Montelanico and before starting the climb towards Segni, a stop at this fountain is essential. Two spouts of always fresh water will help make your fatigue easier.

Baronial Palace, located at the highest point of the Gavignano hill, was probably built by the Counts of Segni, owners of vast territorial estates. One of their descendants born in this same building in 1160 will become the famous Pope Innocent III. After the destruction in 1495, the building has undergone significant transformations that have left a minimal trace of the original structure. It becomes a real castle-residence: square shape, courtyard, large halls, servants' quarters, numerous rooms. A general renovation of the building began at the end of the 15th century by the new feudal lord, Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini. In particular, the inversion of the main facade is noted, with the entrance to the building in a higher position than the level of the square. The most recent interventions are carried out in the twentieth century with the aim of restoring the ancient medieval aspect to the building.

Acuto rises 724 meters above sea level, on a ridge of the Ernici mountains. In a dominant position on the underlying Valle del Sacco: it was founded in the fifth century by inhabitants of Anagni who fled an invasion, but findings have shown that there was already a small inhabited center before the foundation. The first most accurate sources come from 1051, where there is talk of a stronghold located near Anagni, the Castrum Acuti. The fortress was dominated by various local lords and the bishops of Anagni alternately, until the end of the fourteenth century, when it returned to the bishops. From the fifteenth century onwards, Acuto became increasingly linked to Anagni (in fact, the inhabitants of Acuto were also given the citizenship of Anagni in 1478) and consequently to the papacy. From 1809 to 1814 Acuto was under French rule. The municipality then returned to the hands of the bishops, but from 1815 to 1825 it was tormented by brigandage. In 1557 Spain declared war on the Pope, and so Anagni (like the Ciociaria area) was attacked by Marcantonio Colonna, head of an army of Spanish soldiers, who destroyed Frosinone. During the siege, the inhabitants moved to Paliano, another stronghold that was destroyed by soldiers commanded by Marcantonio Colonna. The war ended with the victory of Spain, but Acuto was not devastated by it, as was the case with other nearby cities. Later, having a predominant role over other cities, Acuto clashed several times over the centuries with Anagni, who tried to regain lost supremacy. After many struggles, the clashes between Anagni and Acuto ended in 1806, the year in which Acuto began to decline. In 1870 the municipality passed to the Kingdom of Italy.
