The climb to Erice is definitely a challenge, but one that is worth it! Even during the first switchbacks you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Trapani. The view of the glittering sea and the Aegadian Islands such as Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo motivates you, despite the steady gradient of 4-5%. It goes uphill slowly, but the view quickly makes you forget the effort. The road is largely easy to ride, if a little narrow, but the elevation adds up - to the summit of Monte Erice at about 750 meters above sea level. Ride early in the morning or in the evening to avoid the more intense heat and to take in the special light over the bay. And for anyone who might be hesitant: it is doable, whether on a racing bike or touring bike! Once you get to the top, you can treat yourself to a little tour through the winding streets of the city. A highlight that can be easily combined with a sporty tour!

And then there is the Venus Castle, which was built on the remains of an ancient temple. The castle and the views of the surrounding area alone are worth the steep climb. The medieval alleyways invite you to explore, and even though there are a few steep climbs, they are always worth it. Park your bike and let yourself drift - whether in the summer in clear light or on a foggy winter day, the atmosphere is unique.

The Porta di Trapani is the main entrance gate to the historic town of Erice and is part of the impressive Elimi-Punic Walls. These were originally built by the Elimi in the 8th century BC and later reinforced by the Punics. The gate itself probably dates back to the Norman period, with an architectural structure that suggests it was built in the Middle Ages. The massive stone blocks of the lower sections and the robust construction reflect the military importance of this gate. Passing through the gate, you are transported straight into the narrow, cobbled streets of Erice, which exude the charm of a bygone era. However, one must be prepared for the occasional car driving through the alleys - a small downer in this otherwise historic atmosphere. If you're cycling and want to take a short break near Scopello, the viewpoint at the Faraglioni di Scopello is the perfect place. Even from up here, you have a fantastic view of the imposing rock needles that characterize the Mediterranean flair of the coast. If you want to park your bike for a moment, a short descent down to the water awaits you. There, crystal-clear water and a seabed that is perfect for snorkeling await you. Especially with a mask, you can fully enjoy the colorful underwater world – a short detour that is definitely worth it. The path there runs through the garden and costs admission, but offers stunning views of the sea. But be careful, especially in summer, temperatures can be high, so don't forget to bring plenty of water and take breaks in the shade every now and then.
