The statue of Josip Ban Jelacic

Located in the Dotrščina Forest (northeast of Zagreb), this park is the site of over 7,000 civilian executions between 1941 and 1945, carried out mainly by the Ustaša. Today, it is a vast sculptural memorial designed between 1963 and 1968 by Vojin Bakić, with several works by other artists such as Branko Ružić, Stevan Luketić, and Kosta Angeli Radovani, forming an abstract ensemble evoking mourning rather than an explicit narrative.

The square was created at the foot of two settlements, Kaptol and Gradec, next to the Manduševac spring. In 1641, the city authorities decided that fairs would be held there. Today's buildings were built in the early 19th century. Their facades display various architectural styles, from 19th-century neo-style, Biedermeier and Art Nouveau to modern and postmodern. The square has changed its name several times. Initially, it was used for trading, so it was called Harmica, after the Hungarian word for thirty-cent tax, a customs duty levied on goods. In 1848, during the lifetime of Ban Jelačić, the square was named after him. After World War II, the square was called Trg Republike. Its old name was restored in 1990. In addition to the fact that central social events are held on Ban Josip Jelačić Square, residents meet daily at the most famous places in the city for this purpose - "under the clock" and "under the tail". The monument to Ban Josip Jelačić is the work of Austrian sculptor Anton Fernkorn. It was erected in 1866 and removed in 1947. After a petition from citizens, the monument was returned in 1990 on the Ban's birthday, October 16. Since then, the monument has been oriented south, and no longer north and Hungary as in the original 19th-century setting. Beneath the Manduševac fountain is a spring that supplied Zagreb until the end of the 19th century. Court documents about witch hunts mention the spring as their main meeting place. There is a legend associated with the spring about the origin of the city's name. Namely, one sunny day, an old, ancient Ban, tired and thirsty, on his way back from battle told the beautiful girl Manda to fetch him water from the spring. Thus, the spring was named Manduševac, and the city was named Zagreb. At a time when the water from the well was drinkable, it was said that anyone who drank from it would always return to Zagreb. Today, the legend of Manduševac lives on as a well of luck that fulfills the wish for a coin.
