St. Sebastian's Church in Salzburg is located on Linzergasse in the Inner New Town and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg". It was originally built between 1505 and 1512 as a Gothic plague church under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach and consecrated in 1512. The church is dedicated to Saint Sebastian, who was invoked especially during times of plague, as it was originally located outside the city walls next to a plague cemetery. The current Baroque hall church was built between 1749 and 1753 according to plans by the architect Kassian Singer and was reconsecrated in 1754.

Standing up there, you almost think the city is stretching out just to look more beautiful. Salzburg lies at your feet like a freshly made bed in a boutique hotel – a little too perfect to be true. The towers, the roofs, the fortress, everything is meticulously arranged, as if an architecture student with a penchant for the dramatic had finished building his model and perfectly aligned the light. The Mönchsberg is understated, which makes it all the more appealing. No ostentatious peak, no spectacle – more like a discreet box seat for city lovers. One of those places that wants nothing but quiet enthusiasm. You can sit, look out, and discreetly fall in love with Salzburg. Not with the city as it appears on postcards, but with its intricate reality: the narrow old town, where Mozartkugeln and silk blouses compete for glory, the cathedral, posing like a grand seigneur, and in between, people looking, walking, buying, marveling. A canopy of autumn leaves frames the scene in red and gold – a baroque painting that paints itself. In winter, the haze from the rooftops draws fine lines across the panorama, as if someone were gently applying a layer of melancholy. Below, traffic roars along Rudolfskai, as if trying to make itself important – but you can barely hear it. The Mönchsberg filters the sounds of the city in a way that only mountains can: with wise old indifference. Anyone who hasn't seen this view doesn't know Salzburg. And anyone who has seen it once will miss it the next time, even before they've reached the top.

Trinity Church, Salzburg The Trinity Church is the dominant building on Makartplatz and part of a late Baroque ensemble that is no longer completely preserved. It is located on the edge of the New Town, the 19th-century buildings that were built on the site of former fortifications. The Trinity Church was the first important building built in Salzburg by the Baroque architectural star Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. He also designed St. Mark's Church, the Hospital Church of St. John, and the Collegiate Church. The Trinity Church already has many of the characteristics of a Fischer von Erlach religious building: the central dome, as well as the playful, clearly segmented façade and two towers. These elements sometimes make the Trinity Church appear more like a palace than a church. The Market Square was given its current design in the 19th century. It offers the Trinity Church enough space to unfold its impact on the viewer. The church was built between 1694 and 1702, when Prince Archbishop Ernst von Thun commissioned the construction of a seminary. Fischer von Erlach, as was often the case, was inspired by Roman buildings. The building complex still serves as a seminary today. The Trinity Church is famous for the frescoes in the dome, which were painted by Johann Michael Rottmayr—a successful collaboration that culminated and culminated with the Karlskirche in Vienna. The dome frescoes of the Trinity Church depict the Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, accompanied by the Holy Trinity. Franciscan Church, Salzburg The Franciscan Church is located in Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse in Salzburg, right on the corner of the Franciscan Church and thus in the vicinity of the Residence. The origin of today's Franciscan Church is unclear, but probably dates back to the time of Saint Virgil. The saint may even have personally used the Franciscan Church for baptisms. The oldest written evidence of the Franciscan Church dates back to 1139, but refers to a parish church. However, this church was destroyed by fire in 1167. The main nave of today's church was built in the late Romanesque style in the early 13th century. This makes the Franciscan Church one of the oldest churches still in existence in Salzburg (and Austria). You can't tell by looking at the main gate: it was given a baroque makeover in 1700 and seriously disrupts the building. To the right of the main portal you can see a hand raised as if to take an oath. Mozartplatz & Mozart Monument, Salzburg Mozartplatz is located in the center of Salzburg's old town, in the immediate vicinity of Residenzplatz and Salzburg Cathedral. While the buildings around the square tell many stories, the centerpiece is clearly the Mozart statue. The history of the Mozart statue In the center of Mozartplatz is the Mozart monument by Ludwig Schwanthaler. The statue was supposed to be erected in 1841 on the 50th anniversary of W. A. Mozart's death. However, the unveiling of the monument was delayed by a year because a Roman mosaic was found in the ground, which took a long time to recover. On September 4, 1842, the statue was ceremoniously unveiled in the presence of Mozart's sons. The Bavarian King Ludwig I was an important supporter of the Mozart statue and donated the marble base. A copy of the Roman mosaic can still be found at the feet of the statue today. Mozartplatz then and now Mozartplatz and its buildings are closely linked to the history of the city of Salzburg. On the north side, in the so-called Imhofstöckl (No. 5), is the tourist information office. Behind it is part of the old city wall, which dates back to the time of Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron. Opposite, on the south side, is the New Residence, which has been home to the Salzburg Museum since 2007. The house at Mozartplatz 8 was the home of Constanze Mozart-Nissen, Mozart's widow. On the west side, facing the cathedral, are the Salzburg Christmas Museum and the famous Café Glockenspiel. The poet Georg Trakl was born just a few steps away in 1887. Capuchin Monastery & Capuchin Church, Salzburg The Capuchin Monastery and Capuchin Church in Salzburg were built in the most prominent location imaginable: on a rocky outcrop of the Kapuzinerberg, named after the monastery, which was originally known as Imberg (and is still called that today). There are two routes leading to the Capuchin Monastery: One is via the Imbergstiege, which begins at Steingasse. This is a romantic, albeit steep, staircase that also leads past the small church of St. Johannes im Berg. The "St. John's Church" is overlooked by many visitors to Salzburg; however, it is a Baroque gem with Rococo-style interiors, where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is said to have played. The little church on the Imberg was first documented in the 14th century. It received its current Baroque decoration under Prince Archbishop Max Gandolf. The other route to the Capuchin Monastery leads via the Prügelweg (Way of the Cross) with its Stations of the Cross. It begins at an archway at Linzergasse 14. Along the Prügelweg, you'll see remnants of the old city walls, a fortified gate tower, and six chapels depicting scenes from the Stations of the Cross. The Prügelweg ends at a crucifixion group located directly between the Capuchin Monastery and the Paschinger Schlössl (Pasching Castle). The latter is also known as the Zweigvilla (Branch Villa) because the famous writer stayed there when he was in Salzburg. A small memorial in front of the Capuchin Monastery commemorates Stefan Zweig, who committed suicide with his wife in Petropolis, Brazil, in 1942.
