A fantastic cycling and hiking trail leads past Schmiedeplatz (Blacksmith's Square) in the heart of Harsefeld. Seating is available, along with a drinking water fountain and information about the old blacksmith's shop that used to be located here. The current blacksmith's shop is now situated directly behind the square. A visit is highly recommended! 👍🏻

St. Mary and St. Bartholomew's Church, the Protestant church in Harsefeld. A castle and a church were built in 969 by Henry of Stade. A collegiate church was founded on the site of the castle, which was later converted into a Benedictine monastery. Harsefeld Abbey was dissolved in 1647. A lovely walk can be enjoyed through the abbey park, where you can learn many interesting facts about the church.

Archabbot of Hassefeld In 1101, the foundation established here around 1002 for secular clergy was transformed into a Benedictine monastery. This monastery was directly subordinate to the Pope. From the end of the 14th century until its dissolution in 1647, archabbots led Hassefeld Abbey.

In front of the portal of the church tower, built in 1861, lay a natural stone altar slab until 1993. This was the slab that served as the altar until the church's reconstruction between 1856 and 1861. After the reconstruction of the collegiate church's foundations, the piece was affixed to the west wall of the nave. The surface of the carefully worked stone slab has been polished, and the edge facing the former front is beveled. Five carved crosses are located in the four corners and the center. These are altar consecration crosses that were hammered into the slab. Because the shape of the Greek cross with its flared ends was used for many centuries, dating the slab is not possible.
