The lake is located in the "Elbsee" nature reserve and is surrounded by a roughly 7 km long hiking trail, perfect for a relaxing stroll. The path leads through reed beds, meadows, and forests, offering repeated beautiful views of the lake. A highlight is the 7.5 meter high observation tower on the southern shore, which offers a sweeping view of the lake and the surrounding nature reserve. The tower was built in 1998 and is a popular spot for nature observation. The Elbsee is a nutrient-poor body of still water with a rich flora and fauna. In winter, it serves as a resting place for numerous bird species. Rare birds such as sand martins and little ringed plovers breed on the central island in the lake. The northern shore, with its shallow waters and reed beds, is of particular ornithological importance. In spring and summer, you can observe dragonflies, butterflies, and other insects here. On the eastern shore of the lake is a water sports center, which houses diving, canoeing, surfing, and sailing clubs, as well as the DLRG (German Lifesaving Association). A wellness center is located immediately to the north. However, the area around the water sports center is not part of the nature reserve. A popular hiking trail leads from the observation tower across Lake Menzel to the Elbseeblick (viewpoint), offering diverse landscapes and interesting photo opportunities. The trail is easy to walk and suitable for all fitness levels. Lake Elbsee is a place of peace and nature, ideal for a break from everyday life. Whether hiking, observing nature, or simply enjoying the scenery – everyone will find their place here.

Lake Unterbach is located south of Düsseldorf and extends as far as Hilden. It is one of the region's most popular recreational areas and offers a wide range of opportunities for leisure, sports, and relaxation. The circular path around the lake is well-developed and ideal for hiking, walking, or jogging. Along the way, the surroundings alternate between forest, water, reed beds, and meadows – creating a very diverse landscape. The spacious meadows surrounding the lake are particularly beautiful. In good weather, picnics, games, or simply relaxation are often held here. Many families bring blankets and games – badminton, Frisbee, or soccer are not uncommon. The lake is also a worthwhile destination for children: there are playgrounds, shallow shorelines, and plenty of space to run around. The lake has two lidos (north and south shores) with sunbathing lawns, bathing areas, changing rooms, and restaurants. These are especially popular in summer, as are many for swimming, sailing, and stand-up paddling. There are also boat rentals, barbecue areas (some require reservations), and several places to stop for refreshments – from kiosks to restaurants. The lake is very busy on weekends and during school holidays, especially in good weather. Those seeking peace and quiet should start as early as possible or visit on weekdays. Unterbacher See is also easily accessible by public transport or bike.
