Despite the ever-increasing distance in time from the two terrible world wars that brought hardship and misery to many countries in the first half of the 20th century, such a memorial (war memorial) is by no means a relic of bygone times that has lost its significance for us today. In his speech on May 8, 2025 – exactly 80 years after the capitulation and thus the liberation of Germany from Nazi tyranny – Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said, among other things: “And if new wars worry us today, then we – especially we! – will not lose sight of peace. We know where war leads. We fear it rightly. THEREFORE, OUR PERSPECTIVE REMAINS PEACE. But peace does not prevail simply because we hold back, because we forgo strengthening our own defenses. For we are confronted with a harsh reality: We must do everything, together with our European partners… We must show: Democracies are not defenseless victims.”

"Selina Marie" was installed as the third stair beetle in 2009. As the big sister, Selina watches over all the stair beetles in this city from Petersberg. A lovely child beetle, next to whom you can also take a short rest. The design was created by Anika Knuhr, who was just 9 years old at the time. I wonder if she still visits her beetle at the age of 25? The city of Nordhausen funded the statue. There are 24 other stair beetles, one of which is unfortunately missing.

At the 2004 State Garden Show, there were beautifully blooming rose beds. Today, a memorial grove of trees lines the steps. The 10 Commandments Staircase is part of the Frauenberg Stairway, and two stair beetles can be found here.

The Water Axis has connected Petersberg with Rautenstraße since 2004. It was built as part of the 2nd Thuringian State Garden Show and has been an inviting place to linger ever since. The bronze figures along the axis were designed by the Nordhausen artist Gerd Mackensen and created by the sculptor Lothar Rechtacek. Even after more than 20 years, the figures "Imperial King," "Civil Guard" (consisting of ravens), "Traveling Dog," and "Balancing Dog" (located directly by the Water Pavilion) have lost none of their charm. A lovely place to linger.

I think freely accessible art is very important. It enriches cultural life, since not everyone can afford museum admission. However, it also introduces children and young people to art without any pressure, even if it's sometimes only perceived incidentally.

In addition to the promenade, a garden also belongs to the Nordhausen Theater. This has been partially converted into a partnership garden. There are five oversized sculptures, including "Staircase Beetle BoNo" for the partnership with Bochum. The "Marionette" symbolizes the world capital of puppetry, Charleville-Mézières. The "Apple" is a reference to the royal apple in the coat of arms of the twin city of Ostrów Wielkopolski. The "A" is not only the initial letter of the twin city of Antwerp, but also its city logo. An "Angel" also represents the wish for a good partnership between Bochum and Nordhausen.

This stair beetle even has a Latin name: Scarabeus froebicus internationalis. It has been standing here since 2010, symbolizing all knowledge beetles, and anyone seeking new information will find it between the old town hall and the city information center. The design was created by Nadja Gropp. The figure was funded by Froebel Academy International GmbH. There are 24 other stair beetles, one of which is unfortunately missing.

This stair beetle train consists of seven beetles climbing the State Garden Show stairs. Cute little top hats make them look like fine gentlemen. The design was created by Eleonore Gösel. The train was financed by the VR-Bank in Thuringia and has adorned the LGS stairs since 2009. There are 24 other stair beetles, one of which is unfortunately missing.
