"The central point of the tour is the turning harbor or turning basin." After an adventurous bike ride, you can enjoy a relaxing coffee break on the upper deck and take in the view of the surroundings. It's hard to imagine that half a century ago, where cars now roar across the busy intersection, ships with brown sails made their way. Three fen canals once met here: the Untenende, the 1. Südwieke, and the 1. Ostwieke, but the latter was filled in the 1980s. Instead of crossing the water, a federal highway now runs over the canal bed. At this important crossing point, two large drawbridges once stood, and there was the opportunity to go shopping or stop off at an inn. Just a stone's throw away, a small shipyard built and repaired wooden mastheads and tjalks. The neighboring blacksmith shop also manufactured fittings for the ships and peat digging equipment. The past seems long gone, but sometimes, when a lovingly restored tjalk moors in the turning basin, a touch of nostalgia wafts over this tranquil place, reminding us of times gone by.

The ironworks tower is THE landmark of Augustfehn! A foundry was built here in the middle of the 19th century and operated until 1932. This ironworks company ensured the economic boom of the young Fehn settlement: the population grew quickly, particularly due to the incoming workers. A variety of iron products were manufactured here, including numerous cast goods such as ovens, windows, mirrors and other everyday objects of modern society at the end of the 19th century. Overall, the ironworks industry provided lasting support for the region. The boiler house with water tower, two shed roof halls and parts of the wall are still preserved from the former ironworks site. The three-story water tower has an unusual cube top with a tent roof. It is therefore visible from afar and has become a symbol for Augustfehn. To the south of the tower is the boiler house, where the steam boiler with its fireplace used to stand, which powered the machines with its steam. In 2003, the municipality of Apen bought the ironworks site from the Federal Property Office. In 2010, the boiler house and water tower became the property of Anke and Dieter Börjes, who had the buildings taken back and converted into the EISENHÜTTE restaurant with a cultural program. Not least because of this, the ironworks is a favorite place for many Aper citizens. Here you can enjoy good times with other people, good food and music.
