The Schwalm River meanders peacefully through the park and is an important habitat for birds, fish, and amphibians. Reed beds and trees grow along the banks, and walking paths offer beautiful spots to enjoy the rippling water and the surrounding nature.

The area between the Schwalm and Nette rivers offers a wide variety of habitats. The wetlands provide a habitat for a rich variety of flora and fauna and are of supraregional importance for nature conservation. Rare animals such as the kingfisher, the grass snake, and the nightjar call this area home. Among the unique landscape features of the Schwalm-Nette Nature Park are the numerous lakes and nature reserves, such as the Elmpter Schwalmbruch. At the heart of the 296-hectare Elmpter Schwalmbruch nature reserve lies a large bog, a remnant of the once vast lowland peatlands along the Schwalm.
