These bunkers are all part of the Holland Line or Hollandstellung; from the Zwin to Antwerp on the Kempen Line. The Germans built these during World War I out of distrust of the Dutch. What does this actually have to do with natural heritage? The bunkers have been embedded in the landscape for so long that they give it a certain value. Certain animals also enjoy their presence. Lembeke originated on the inland dunes that formed about 10,000 years ago, when the mainland was still connected to England. Silex finds from the Mesolithic prove that hunter-nomads set up camp on the south side of the dune ridge. The entire Lembeke territory was a sandy, heathland region, crossed by a ridge, on which centuries later the Antwerp highway from Oosteeklo to Eeklo sought its way. Very old lare names (lare = open space in the forest) such as Cattelare, Gokelare, Hokelare... point to the original afforestation and heathland.
