A typical Aosta Valley village nestled in the mountains, a crossroads for Colle San Carlo, the Piccolo San Bernardo, and Pré-Saint-Didier. A little trivia: it was here that, at the end of the Second World War, a partisan brigade and a small republican brigade, putting aside all hatred, jointly opposed De Gaulle's attempt to annex the Aosta Valley to France.

The interior walls of the church were decorated by the painter Ettore Mazzini in 1945-46 at the request of the parish priest Elie Pession and as atonement for a wish expressed by the population of La Thuile to obtain divine protection during the Second World War. The bell tower consists of a square tower in plastered stone, decorated with arches on the top two floors. It probably dates back to the 14th or 15th century. The spire is from the 18th century. Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of the church and parish, is painted in a fresco located in the left lateral apse, with the representation of two episodes of his life. The relics of Saint Nicholas, who was bishop of Myra (in Turkey) in the 4th century, were transferred to Bari on 9 May 1087. It is very likely that this date was chosen to celebrate the patronal feast, instead of the traditional date of 6 December, for climatic reasons.

In the community of La Thuile, this crucifix is venerated not only for its artistic value, but also and above all because it is linked to a prodigious event. In 1794, French soldiers had destroyed everything in their path, even the church had been looted and damaged. Only the crucifix remained in its place, under the vault. The soldiers decided to knock it down, first with ropes and then, failing that, they tried to reach it directly by walking on the internal cornice of the church. But this attempt failed and some of them died. The others became discouraged and the crucifix remained in its place. On the vault we can still read: "Haec Christi imago caeteris cuntis bello vastatis 1794 mirabilite remansit. Deo gratias" ("Of all the things destroyed in the war of 1794, this image of Christ was miraculously saved. Thanks be to God").

Of the older church, we only know that it had three naves. Some documents indicate that it was rebuilt in the late 15th century. A new construction was necessary following the devastation and fires caused by the passage of French troops in the 17th and 18th centuries. This is the church we see today, consecrated by Monsignor Pierre-François de Sales, Bishop of Aosta, on June 15, 1742. The building has a Latin cross plan and semicircular apses. The current choir is the result of major transformations carried out in 1984 to adapt it to liturgical needs. The previous gray marble altar, set against the apse wall, was removed due to its modest value. In its place was placed the gilded wooden tabernacle from the 18th century, originally from the Convent of the Visitation in Aosta, suppressed in the early 19th century. Above the altar, as in almost all churches in the Aosta Valley, there is a beautiful 15th-century wooden crucifix.

In the square in front of the main entrance of the Villaret tunnel there are the technical rooms serving the mining activity. The first building to the left of the tunnel entrance housed the compressors that allowed the miners to use compressed air hammers and forced ventilation, as well as the rooms for converting electrical energy. In the low and long building to the right of the tunnel there were: • the lamp factory, for supplying the carbide lamps to be used in the tunnel and for their maintenance, • the forge for working the tools and especially the tips of the pneumatic hammers, • the carpentry shop for treating the wood to be used to support the tunnels. In the square other buildings were subsequently built, used as warehouses and garages as well as workshops for the maintenance of the locomotives. In more recent times one of them was transformed into a chapel serving the Father Kolbe holiday home. The yard was crossed by tracks for the transit of the trains that carried the waste material outside, which was then deposited on the slope towards the Dora. Tracks also arrived from the opposite side of the slope, from the Preylet tunnel. The wagons loaded with anthracite passed the small bridge over the Dora and the road, then entered the tunnel to reach, via the descent, the loading station in the tunnel of the train headed for Arpy. After 1959 the tracks carried the coal wagons to the washery located to the west where the anthracite treatment previously carried out in Morgex took place.

The “Peylet” pine forest in La Thuile is not just a picnic area, it is the heart of the town. A suggestive place, an environment where you can relax and be lulled by the sweet and ancient song of the waters of the Dora del Rutor, the chirping of birds and the squeaking of countless squirrels. Inside it is possible to walk in complete safety, stop at the 52 tables scattered around the area and for the more curious you can stop at various information panels that tell the story of the flora and fauna of the place. 2 and a half hectares, with 14 waste collection points where you can have a perfect relaxing and regenerating picnic

From Maison Berton we head to Entrèves. This position – between the Rutor and Dora di Verney streams – has given the hamlet its name. In fact, Entrèves means “between the waters”. Saint Barbara is the patron saint of the neo-Gothic chapel in this hamlet. The Saint was venerated by the inhabitants who attributed to her the merit of having spared the village the disastrous fire of 1794, which instead involved and destroyed the other centers. The current construction dates back to about a hundred years later (1876). The statue of the Saint is placed on the wooden altar together with Saint Joseph, as it is depicted on one of the five canvases that surround the altar itself. Noteworthy is the painting by Vauterin with the martyrdom of Saint Erasmus. The sculptural Pietà from the 18th century, which is located in the sacristy of the parish church, also comes from the Entrèves chapel. This beautiful chapel underwent a major restoration in 2011 by the Alpine group of La Thuile.

In La Thuile, near Mont Blanc, there is the Maison Musée Berton, a recently set up house museum inside a private villa built by the Berton Brothers and donated complete with its priceless collections of Aosta Valley craft objects (furniture, furnishings, sculptures, drawings, prints, books) so that it could become a museum.
