The story goes that in Sandavágur, a shepherd was tending his flock in the mountains. He spotted a beautiful young woman in a striking red dress. He was immediately captivated and fell in love with her. However, whenever he approached her, she disappeared, only to reappear further away. This went on for a while, and the shepherd tried desperately to catch up with her, but never succeeded. Eventually, he realized that she was not a human woman, but a huldra (also known as the huldrevolk or hidden people)—a mythical creature from Scandinavian folklore, often depicted as beautiful and seductive, but with a hollow back or a tail and living in the wild. The huldra are known for luring people, especially men, into the mountains or their realm.

We start in Miðvágur, pay the entrance fee for the first time on this vacation, and walk up the Trælanípa cliff toward the waterfall. Trælanípa (Faroese for Slave Cliff) is a 148-meter-high cliff on the south coast of the island of Vágar. It's a popular tourist destination and offers spectacular views of Lake Leitisvatn, which appears to float above the sea. The name "Slave Cliff" comes from the old legend that disabled Irish slaves were pushed into the sea from here. There are hiking trails leading to the cliff. However, we are only allowed to take one path because it is still breeding season...🪺🐣🐤

Our destination, Trøllkonufingur, translated as "Witch's Finger" or "Troll Woman's Finger," is an impressive, 313-meter-high monolith that rises majestically from the sea off the southeast coast of Sandavágur. The rock formation is shrouded in local legend: It is said that a witch wanted to throw the Faroe Islands to Iceland. When she reached the shores of Vágar, the sun rose and turned her to stone. Because she was so enormous, only the back of her head (now the island of Koltur) and her finger (Trøllkonufingur) protruded above the water.

Historically, Sandavágur has a rich past. A 13th-century runestone was discovered here in 1917, indicating the presence of early Norse settlers, including a Viking named Torkil Onundarson. We visit this runestone in the striking red-roofed church, built in 1917.

The statue stands in front of his childhood home, the Beitinum in Miðvágur. It depicts the famous writer Mikkjal á Ryggi. Mikkjal Dánjalsson á Ryggi (1879–1956) was born in Miðvágur and lived in Gásadalur. He was a teacher and politician. However, Mikkjal á Ryggi is best known for his literary work, which includes poems, psalms, local histories, and schoolbooks. The number of psalms Mikkjal á Ryggi wrote is remarkable. No other Faroese writer wrote as many psalms as he did. Furthermore, Mikkjal á Ryggi was the first to write local histories. In the spring of 2011, a statue in Mikkjal á Ryggi's honor was unveiled. The statue depicts Mikkjal á Ryggi in full size, made of bronze, sanding an open stone book. The book features quotes from Mikkjal á Ryggi's work. The statue was created by sculptor Hans Pauli Olsen. It is located in front of Mikkjal's childhood home, í Beitinum, in Miðvágur.

The small, colorful sheds serve as storage rooms. One even houses a public restroom. Their bright colors make them a lovely photo opportunity.

The Vestmanna Seabird Cliffs are the most famous attraction. Boat tours depart from the Vestmanna Tourist Centre and lead to the impressive cliffs, which are up to 600 meters high. Thousands of seabirds such as puffins, guillemots, razorbills, and fulmars nest here.
