In near-total silence, we stroll across the grounds, savoring the moment. The church shines in all its glory, bathed in the rays of the autumn sun. We enter the church; a service is in progress, and it's noticeable that Sorbian is still actively spoken here. We don't want to disturb them any further. We continue our walk through the grounds, reach the monastery café, and take a seat. After a while, we head back outside and are surprised by a flood warning sign. A few meters away, the Klosterwasser stream babbles along, almost like a brook, several meters below. We return to the church. Now, after the service, let's take another look inside. It's built in the Late Gothic style. The interior is beautiful, too, with a view of the altar and the interplay of red and white tones. The gallery is lined with statues. The Scharfensteg Bridge is a historic, old city bridge in Bautzen, used for both road and pedestrian traffic. It is one of several important bridges crossing the Spree River in Bautzen, connecting various parts of the city.

The church was built after 1450 outside the city wall over an old Spree crossing. According to legend, it was a token of gratitude from the citizens for saving the city from the Hussite attack of 1429, attributed to Archangel Michael. The vault, with its paintings, which are still largely preserved in their original form, was completed in 1498. Since 1619, the church has served as a place of worship for the townspeople surrounding Bautzen. It was often damaged in various wars but never destroyed. The Wendish Tower, or Serbska wěža in Sorbian, is part of Bautzen's medieval city fortifications. It is located on the northeastern edge of the old town and is now structurally connected to Gottfried Semper's Old Barracks (Stara kaserna). The Mill Gate, or Młynske wrota in Sorbian, is a historic city gate in Bautzen and is considered the smallest of the city's medieval gates. It represents the only access to the city from the west and was built after the Hussite sieges of 1429 and 1431.
