Mosel is always a great place for hiking. 👌🏻

Leaving the Eifel village of Brieden heading south along County Road 20, hikers and walkers inevitably pass this open chapel. It's a modern building made of natural stone, perhaps replacing an older predecessor—though this is beyond my knowledge.

This beautifully maintained little chapel is located in the Eifel village of Kail, not far from the parish church. The saint's figure standing in the apse, protected by a grille, is clearly recognizable as a monk of the Franciscan order—depicted in the typical brown habit and tonsure. He holds a cross in one hand and a book, the Holy Scripture, in the other. However, this one depicts Saint Anthony, not the founder (Saint Francis of Assisi).

As in almost every village (not just in Germany), hikers and walkers in the Eifel village of Kail will encounter a memorial honoring the victims of both World Wars. It is located within a small green area between the main portal of the parish church of St. Bartholomew (if interested, see =>> https://www.komoot.com/de-de/highlight/377751 ) and a small, artificially constructed rock formation at the other end of the meadow, featuring a statue of the Virgin Mary and Saint Bernadette (the so-called "Lourdes Grotto"). Plaques list the names of the victims who came from Kail and did not survive the First and Second World Wars.

The venerated statue of the Virgin Mary, placed here in a man-made grotto next to the parish church of Kail (if interested, see =>> https://www.komoot.com/de-de/highlight/377751 ), is the statue of the Virgin Mary from Lourdes. This well-known Marian pilgrimage site is located in the French Pyrenees and is visited annually by large numbers of people, including many sick people hoping for healing. The devotional image of the Virgin Mary has become widespread – not only in France – with believers building Lourdes chapels and grottos everywhere.

Hidden within the artificially created grotto here is an interesting small shrine commemorating the Passion of Jesus: the Mount of Olives Grotto in Pomerania. According to the New Testament accounts of the Passion of Jesus Christ, the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem was the scene of two events following the "Last Supper": + Jesus' prayer to God the Father, during which the exhausted disciples fell asleep; + and subsequently, the arrest of Jesus. The rear wall of the chapel already depicts Mount Golgotha (Hill of the Skull) with its three crosses.

In the Moselle village of Pommern (Rhineland-Palatinate, no connection with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), the Pommerbach river ends its life. After flowing through the Volcanic Eifel, it flows into the Moselle.
