On the spot where the church stands today, there once stood a mighty oak tree, near which heavenly hymns of praise were often heard. When the tree was felled and sawn in half, an image of Mary with the body of Jesus Christ on her lap was found in the hollow trunk. Because there was no church in Neckarkatzenbach at the time, the image was placed in the middle of the village where the streets divide. To everyone's astonishment, however, the image returned to its original location during the night. When even the guardians of the image seriously contradicted the claim that the image had been carried back by human hands, the people's devotional zeal grew so great that it was decided to build a pilgrimage church over the tree stump, which was to serve as an altar. The people of Katzenbach considered the discovery of the image of Mary so close to their village a miracle. They sawed down the tree to a height of five feet (about 1.5 m), placed the Pieta on it, and built a small chapel around this pious work. Initially, the tree stump with the Vesperbild (Vesper image) served as the altar, later a stone altar table with the carved date 1519. The small church is built in the late Gothic style; the octagonal choir contains three beautiful, two-part tracery windows. The small side door indicates the year of construction, 1511. Because the image was venerated as miraculous, a lively pilgrimage to the new church soon began. But just six years after its construction, the Augustinian monk Martin Luther published his theses on the official church's indulgence trade in Wittenberg, and one year later, he defended them at the Heidelberg Colloquium. The Reformation spread quickly in the Electorate of the Palatinate, and the majority of the population converted to the new faith. Evangelical sermons were now also held in our little church, and the image of the Virgin Mary was placed in a side niche. The pilgrimage, which had begun so promisingly, came to an end, along with the continued construction of the church, which was to be financed by the proceeds from the pilgrimage. The nave and tower remained unfinished, and the already built choir received a simple wall finish.

A magnificent view of Zwingenberg Castle, a place steeped in history for Baden. The last Grand Duke of Baden fled to this place when rebel revolutionaries stormed the castle in Karlsruhe. It was here that Grand Duke Frederick II made his preliminary declaration (renunciation of governmental power) on November 14, 1918, which culminated in his resignation on November 22, 1918, at Langenstein Castle.

A wonderful stretch between two gems on the Neckar River. Neckargerach and Zwingenberg stand out for their castles.

The Neckar Cycle Path runs almost directly along the Neckar River from Mosbach to Heidelberg, offering countless beautiful views. Those who would like to sign the border register can do so at the bench before Hirschhorn, where the border crossing from Baden (Württemberg) into Hesse is located (see the silver mailbox at the bench). The large boundary stones to Hirschhorn, located directly next to the cycle path, are historical witnesses to the former state border.
