Bogorodica Ljeviška (Serbian Cyrillic Богородица Љевишка, Albanian Kisha e Shën Premtës, or Xhamia e Xhumasë) is the Serbian Orthodox central church of Prizren and the cathedral of the Eparchy of Raszien-Prizren. Founded in the early 14th century by King Stefan Uroš II Milutin, it is the oldest five-domed church in Serbian art. During the Ottoman rule it was rededicated into a mosque. The badly damaged frescoes were discovered in the 1950s. Thanks to the quality of the execution by the Greek painters Michael Astrapes and Eustychios and the architectural importance of the cathedral, it has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Medieval Monuments in Kosovo since 2006. At the same time, the City Cathedral of Prizren was put on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger because of the unclear legal situation in Kosovo and the difficult security situation. Albanian extremists heavily damaged the church in 2004 during the pogroms in the Serbian province against the Serb residents and Serb cultural assets in Kosovo. Some of the frescoes were destroyed by heat and fire, the entire interior was demolished and parts of the construction were damaged by the fire.

After the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in the Russo-Ottoman War in 1878, in which many Albanians fought alongside the Ottomans, the Peace of San Stefano was signed, which foresaw that various areas inhabited by Albanians would come under Slavic rule. Local Albanian defense committees were formed spontaneously in the vilayets of Shkodra, Kosova and Monastir. On June 10, 1878, more than 300 Albanian delegates gathered in Prizren to take action against the ceding of Albanian territories to neighboring states. The Assembly established the Albanian League, also called the Prizren League. On June 18, 1878, 47 Albanian beys signed the so-called Kararname, which expressed the political and cultural interests of the Albanians. The League's foreign policy goals were to prevent the cession of territory, the return of the occupied Ottoman territories, the sending of a delegation to the Berlin Congress and autonomy for the areas inhabited by Albanians within the Ottoman Empire.
