From the Gamsknogel ridge, you have a magnificent view of the Inzell Valley. This ridge should not be underestimated, however, and should only be attempted by experienced climbers. It is very narrow and drops extremely steeply. Not for those with a fear of heights.

A dangerous route for inexperienced climbers. Depending on the weather, strong gusts of wind and cold temperatures can be expected, even in summer. Some sections require climbing using steel ropes and handholds right next to the steep slope. Without alpine experience, you'll definitely reach your limits here. Be careful! But the view and the experience are worth it.

The rafting systems were used to transport firewood for the Old Saltworks in Bad Reichenhall. The parts of the system that are still preserved are listed buildings. It is not yet clear when firewood for salt production was transported to Bad Reichenhall by rafting. Archaeological evidence shows that there are quite large settlements from the Bronze Age and the La Tène period in the area of today's Karlstein district, whose economic basis was almost certainly the brine springs in the valley basin. Before the introduction of modern systems with steam and heat exchangers in the New Saltworks in the middle of the 20th century, salt was extracted from brine by boiling. The only fuels available in earlier times were wood and peat. It is said that the forest stocks and thus the firewood in and around Bad Reichenhall were already exhausted in the early Middle Ages. At the still existing drift weir above the Luitpold Bridge, where the Long Bridge over the Saalach used to be, the wood was channeled into the town on the water of the Saalach using the drift rake and over a lock weir with nine draw gates (the nine Däher). An extension of the Long Bridge or Luitpold Bridge led over the Triftbach. This extension was located roughly where Thumseestrasse joins Loferer Strasse today. Gravel carried along was channeled from there over the Sandkanal lock and over a canal back into the Saalach. Large sections of the wall of this canal are still preserved on the right bank of the Saalach below the Luitpold Bridge. The drift canal ran west of today's Triftmeisterweg and followed part of today's Reichenbachstrasse. At the Spiegelwehr, the wood was separated from the water and channeled over a wooden grate over the Fürschlacht to the timber yards. At the level of today's Neue Saline, the logs were distributed to the drift grounds via an ingenious lock system. From there, the wood was brought ashore, processed and transported by horse-drawn carts to the saltworks to fire the brewing pans. Excess water from the rafting system was drained off via the Kohlbach, which flowed into the Saalach just above today's Nonner Steg.
